Conservatives Still In Neutral

Ahhh, life in the slow lane.

OTTAWA —
A new poll suggests Stephen Harper's Conservatives have lost their big lead over the Liberals, plunging six percentage points in popular support in just one week. The Canadian Press Harris-Decima survey puts the Tories at 30-per-cent support, in a statistical tie with the Liberals, who are up four points to 32 per cent.
Support for the Tories dropped across all regions and demographic
groups.

The Wingnutosphere will no doubt be atwitter with their requisite responses:
  • Poll? What poll? We don't believe in polls.
  • It's the CBC!
  • It's the Red Star!
  • Sound of deafening silence as BTs ignore story altogether.

Take your pick.

TOO GOOD TO PASS UP: Researchers have discovered a giant rat in Indonesia! Originally thought to have been a new species, Stephen Harper today confirmed that it is not.

It won't last. If we ever got into a serious election campaign, people would be reminded what a maroon Dion is.

Red Canuck said...

Excellent point, anonymous. That's why after a year of Dion bashing, the hapless Conservatives still find themselves unable to open up any sort of a sustainable lead in the polls.

Ever consider that with that kind of track record, maybe the maroon isn't Dion?

Ha! RC - John Baird was a contemporary of ours at Queen's. A blowhard from the AMS, or ASUS or some shitty student government, if memory serves.

Red Canuck said...

Bowler - Really? I don't remember him at all...but I didn't know most of those ASUS types. Unless they happened to grace the pages of the Golden Words.

Baird was likely a member of the Young Conservatives or whatever their equivalent was at Queen's. I can just picture him sitting there manning the desk at clubs night, firing spitballs at the Young Dippers...

This week the Conservatives are down, next week they may be up and then down again. Who gives a rat's? The only thing that matters is the poll on election day.

Enjoy it while you can...it may be short lived.

You're quite right. I don't take any particular pleasure in these specific numbers.

But I am amused by the fact that despite all their contemptuous grandstanding, derision of the Opposition, denigration of Dion, slavish pandering to Quebec nationalists, and national TV propaganda, the Conservatives just can't manage to escape their own shadow.

This round may be short-lived, but the flatline trend should speak volumes to the CPC.

red canuck, bowler...John Baird was your contemporary at Queen's? Both him AND Ali Velshi?! Wow. I bet you never guessed back then how much greatness was in your midst.

The answer is clear: Stephen Harper is NOT a leader. ;)

Oh, and no pic of the rat? What a rip-off!

When can we start importing them here so we can take care of this pesky cat infestation we have?

RT - Oh, and no pic of the rat? What a rip-off!

It was hard to find an article without a pic of the rat! But I persevered so as not to spoil my very puerile John Baird joke. :)

MD - Unlike Baird, Ali Velshi did make a name for himself at Queen's...although perhaps not in the manner he would have liked. At a speech given by Preston Manning, Velshi became confrontational with some Reform supporters, and got kicked out of the hall. But not before the campus papers snapped some priceless pics of him going toe to toe with some old geezer. The pics became legend around campus for a few months as they were recycled with varying captions for humorous intent by the satiric newpaper the Golden Words. I still chuckle when I see him on CNN...

MD - Baird was there all right, but RC is also right, Velshi made for much funnier Golden Words satire. Baird was a PC Youth, not Hitler Youth, I mean Reform Youth, so I don't believe he defended the old dude from the wrath of Velshi. However, Baird has certainly proven himself to be a Reformer at heart with his performance in Harris' government and now with the feds.

BTW - Off topic but I couldn't agree more with something you said on a previous thread. Both Schreiber and Mulroney are lying sacks of shit. It's tempting to say just forget it, Airbus has already been done to death, but for the fact that Muldoon has pocketed $2.1 million of taxpayer dollars in settlement for "damage to his reputation", while the whole time he had lots of $1,000 bills collecting dust in his safe, undeclared to the tax man.

Red Canuck said...

Bowler - Re: Mulroney/Schreiber, I know what you mean about wanting to just say "forget it". The $2.1 million settlement irks me, but spending even more taxpayer money on these two nutsacks doesn't seem like a fruitful exercise. Too much time has passed, too many lies have been told, and too little evidence exists to prove anything.

I'll just take some measure of satisfaction from knowing that only 10% of Canadians believed Mulroney's testimony (from a recent poll). 10%!!! That's almost random chance! So as far as I'm concerned, he can take his $2.1 million to the grave knowing that his lasting 'legacy' was being known as a duplicitous, corrupt dirtbag of a former PM.

Well, this is obviously O/T, but I wanted to wish you and yours a Merry Christmas.

All the very best.
