I think TSN could afford to buy the song, but I don't know how it would sound attached to their show. Generations of hockey fans have grown up associating that theme with HNIC. It might be like separating the bun from the hamburger patty; you could still eat them, but somehow it wouldn't be the same as a burger. :)
People will get over it. At the end of the day, we watch hockey for the hockey.
I wonder if the composer's estate overestimated their bargaining position...they are unlikely to earn such a steady stream of income trying to sell the tune for other purposes. Maybe the CBC just pissed them off too much by taking liberties with the last agreement.
