Mumbai Under Attack

Mumbai has suffered a series of co-ordinated terrorist attacks which have left over 80 dead and hundreds injured. Yet another disgusting and cowardly act against innocent people. Let's hope that the the current crisis is resolved quickly and that the perpetrators are caught and punished severely.

British PM Gordon Brown:
"These outrageous attacks in Mumbai will be met with a vigorous response. I have sent a message to Prime Minister (Manmohan) Singh that the UK stands solidly with his government as they respond, and to offer all necessary help."

Brooke Anderson (Spokesperson for Barack Obama):
"[President-elect Obama] strongly condemns today's terrorist attacks in Mumbai, and his thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families and the people of India. These coordinated attacks on innocent civilians demonstrate the grave and urgent threat of terrorism."

Russian President Dimitry Medvedev:
"We are concerned about the loss of life and consider that acts of terrorism of this type are harmful to the whole international order and are a challenge to humanity,"

Liberal MP Bob Rae:
"Arlene and I will be praying for a safe release of the hostages, and hope that the perpetrators of these horrendous acts of violence are brought to justice. Let me also extend my special concern to all Canadians -- my own family included -- who have a special place in their lives for India and her people."

Been watching the coverage non-stop since the attack started. The scope and coordination of the attack was stunning, in particular the attack on a hospital for women and children. The chief of the Anti-Terrorism Force was shot and killed in a firefight, as were two other senior officers in fights at another location. The official death toll now exceeds 100.

Its a resilient city and I'm sure it will recover. There is still fighting at the Oberoi and Niriman House...hopefully those will be resolved soon. But regaining control of the city is only the first step. The attack was probably timed for maximum political impact, with a general election set for 09, and voting in Madya Pradesh going on today. The political implications will be explosive if this gets linked to the ISI. I'm not really sure how to deal with people this far removed from reason.

The fellow I train with at my gym is Indian (family from near Mumbai). We spoke about this situation this morning and he's convinced that Pakistan is behind this, at least that the financial backing for it is ultimately traceable to Pakistan. I have no way of knowing if that's at all real or pure "tin foil hat".

Bowler: It is certainly not "tin foil" hat. It will take a while to investigate, but Pakistan has to be considered the most likely suspect. I've been live streaming from an Indian news network broadcasting from Mumbai, and they are reporting eyewitness accounts of militants speaking accented Punjabi. The evidence suggests they came in from the sea in boats with bags of with guns, ammunition, US dollars, explosives, and believe it or not, almonds (food for a long siege perhaps?).

Where did the boats and supplies come from? This was an extremely sophisticated, expensive, well planned attack. I don't believe that something this sophisticated could be accomplished without the assistance of a foreign intelligence apparatus like the ISI. And they are holding hostages in a building with Jewish families...clearly this has the hallmarks of Islamic terrorism.

Hmm. I guess I was hoping any involvement by Pakistan was the stuff of conspiracy theories. The reality would have frightening implications.
