Why Do French People Hate Quebecers?
Everyone's favourite Mr. Belvedere lookalike and corpulent xenophobe Jacques Parizeau is back in the news. Proving that he has his finger on the pulse of Canada's burning issues, he wonders why do French people hate Quebecers so much?
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to enjoy a bowl of Liberty Onion Soup and a plate of Freedom Fries.

Jacques Parizeau is such a strange man, its difficult to fathom. He is well travelled, well educated, and cosmopolitan, yet his world view is so insular, xenophobic, and regressive. He has this 19th century view of people as "nations" in search of states, and his criticisms sound more appropriate to be used against the Congress of Vienna than 21st century Canada. Most bizarrely, he decided to settle down in France, a unitary state with an unapolgetic hard line against separatists.
MD - I don't even pretend to understand the mentality of Quebec separatists like Parizeau. They see no inherent problem with France's stance against separatism because they view France as "the nation" of French people, which is quite naturally indivisible. And by some extensive, wherever French people have settled (i.e Quebec), they should be entitled to their own nationhood. But when aboriginal peoples in Quebec voted over 90% to remain with Canada, they were scoffed at by the separatists because, naturally, Quebec is indivisible. Even though the native peoples were there long before any European settlers. But hey, they're not French, so they don't count.
Or something like that. Who knows...
Sorry, "extension", not "extensive".
Speaking of 19th century views, that latest video from the McCain/Palin rally in Pennsylvania (another blue state!) blows my mind. The Republicans are playing with fire in inciting these sort of mobs.
Bowler - Tell me about it. Give those people pitchforks and torches, and you've got a scene from Frankenstein.
One problem for France is that there are ethnic and linguistic minorities in the country (Basques, Corsicans and the Celts in Brittany) who could push for independence if the French government gave too much support for Quebec nationalism. The risk is that France could become Spain.
Don't worry, even to us, french speaking Independantists,Parizeau appears as a grumpy disconnected man.
Sometimes I wonder on which side he is...
French hates us because they don't understand why we should be begging for France approbation to make ''the move''...
And I agree with you, Red, aboroginal peoples should be entitled to their own nationhood
if Quebec independance is done... Simple logic here.
I presume most of my fellows independantists would disagree with me, but hey,
everybody knows disagreeing is our favorite hobby...

With the powers of the King's Clerk abolished, the bailiffs of Norwich set about regulating the operation of the market for what they felt was the greatest benefit to the city. To encourage fair competition among the market's traders, it was forbidden to sell foodstuffs before the Cathedral bell had tolled for Lady Mass (6.00 am).[7] The practice of forestalling (meeting merchants on their way to the market either to buy their goods for resale, or to prevent them from attending the market and thus make goods of the type they were selling scarce, and hence more expensive) was forbidden.

Her administration had two primary focuses: education and economic development. She secured an increase in education funding during a special legislative session in 1985 and successfully used economic incentives to bring a Toyota manufacturing plant to Georgetown, Kentucky, in 1986. After her term as governor, she became president of Saint Catharine College near Springfield, Kentucky. Her husband's conviction on charges of influence-peddling in 1993 damaged her hopes for a return to political life.
