Regret to inform...

I am posting to inform you that Red Canuck passed away on October 13, 2009, in Vancouver. He had added me as a contributor to his blog as he started his terminal decline so that I may communicate with his readers after his death. He died peacefully, surrounded by his family.

In addition to being an excellent physician, and an excellent man, he was my big brother and best friend. Navigating through life without his wisdom and expert counsel is an inconceivable task, but one which I now have to face. He once told me how fascinated he was by the nature of the online community. Although he knew many of you only through cyberspace, he gained a sense of some of your personalities and was deeply touched by the comments left on his last post.

RC blogged anonymously because he felt it would be unprofessional for his patients to be made aware of his political opinions and observations. Although that is obviously no longer a consideration, I will respect his view and not write his name here. As many who follow this blog know his identity, I would still like to mention his request that you not send flowers. He preferred that in lieu of flowers, well wishers consider contributing to cancer research.

RC's blog showcased his belief in progress through humanism, rational thinking, and the scientific method. Perhaps one day science will offer us a world in which even the most aggressive cancers cannot deprive us of such a sharp wit and keen intellect. Red Canuck, you enriched the lives of all who knew you. Rest in Peace.

My condolences.

Both my father and my big brother are fighting cancer right now. My brother is terminal, so, sadly, I will soon know how you feel.

Today is the worst day of my life. Our wonderful son (Red Canuck) lost his battle with cancer which he fought with extreme courage and dignity. Never once he displayed the "why me?" syndrome. He was a true fighter and fought the cancer with all his might literally to the last second. His sense of humour, compassion and thoughtfulness for all and his incredibly infectious smile endeared him to all who knew him. He loved his Blog and the many friends he made in the Blogosphere. He suffered a lot without complaining and now his suffering is over. All our love for the happiness you truly deserve, rest in peace our WONDERFUL SON.

MD and Grieving Father:

He touched a lot of lives in a very positive way.

To lose him at such a young age is a great loss for his friends and for the medical profession. I know how hard he worked to achieve his goals and I believe that with his keen intellect and sense of humour that he was destined for greatness.

It is difficult for any of us to understand how much greater a loss this must be for you, his family and loved ones. I can't find any words in a moment like this to provide adequate consolation, but I would say that only a great family could have produced such a great man.

Those of who were lucky enough to know him in "real life" will support and be there for you in any way that we can.

I only read his blog peripherally, but he struck me as a smart, sincere, and kind person.

My condolences and best wishes to his friends and family. I think we lost a good one here.

i won't pretend that i had anything more than a passing familiarity with red canuck, but the few times that we did dialogue, he was warm and receptive.

my deepest condolences to his fine family. i'm sure you have much from which to take pride in his memory; take further pride in the knowledge that he was - is - held in great respect by those of us fortunate enough to have encountered him.

Like some of the others here, I was only a periodic visitor, but he always struck me as presenting well thought out and well meant ideas.

I wish you and your family as much peace as you can find at a time like this.

Thankyou, MD, for letting us all know of Red Canuck's passing. He will be, & already was, sorely missed by those who followed his posts. His humour, wit, insights were always right on the mark! A wonderful man who has left us at far too young an age.

My thoughts, heart & prayers go out to his family, friends & to all of those who he has touched in his own unique & wonderful way.

A few dialogues were sufficient to get a sense of this man, but never enough to know how much he has touched many.

Grieving Father, my sincere condolences. Having attended my share of funerals, it is always saddest when survivors are from an older generation. I once had a father tell me "this isn't how it's supposed to be, I should be in that casket and my son should be here laughing and telling you tales from my long life".
Absolutely heartbreaking.

Rest in peace, Red Canuck.
