What Could Possibly Go Wrong...

...with Deficit Jim getting a 3 billion dollar cheque to do with as he pleases?

As an aside, I wonder if it troubles folks in the Wingnut world that their former Reformers are now advocates for handing out billions of taxpayer dollars without oversight or public accountability. Just askin'.

Expect the usual "Silence of the Lambs" coming from the Bloggin' Tories. Now, if the Liberals were doing it, THEN all the furies of Hell would be unleashed and you'd barely be able to hear yourself think for all the blood-curdling howls of outrage.

Quite so. If this had been Michael Ignatieff's proposal rather than Stephen Harper's, the hive mind over at the Blogging Tories would have doubled over in paroxysms of rage and lost control of their bowels.

Far from expressing outrage, I'm fairly certain most Conservabots will throw the whole "transparency and accountability" concept under the bus and actually tout this slush fund as great accomplishment of the Harper government.

This is like watching a train wreck being created in slow motion. Flaherty with $3 billion no strings attached? The opposition better not cave in on this one.

ps. Nice pic. It reminds me of the cover of Stevie Cameron's "On The Take." Sometimes one picture just captures the entire zeitgeist.

MD - As Canadian Cynic said over at his place, it's pretty rich for the Conservatives to claim there isn't time for fiscal accountability after they prorogued parliament for 7 weeks.

Just saw Harper interviewed on Fareed Zakaria's show. Very interesting interview. He actually came across quite well and, interestingly, he stated we wouldn't ever beat the insurgency in Afghanistan (I don't think he's ever mentioned that in Parliament). You should watch the show when it hits the west coast later today.

Remarkably, Zakaria introduced him both as the PM and as an "economist." I wonder if Harper frequently tries to play up his old degree on the world stage while Flaherty pilots us into the ground at home.

MD - I saw the first few minutes, and then changed the channel. Harper usually comes across as a smooth and confident speaker...it was part of his schtick vs Stephane Dion's broken English. But the content is typically lacking. And rest assured his current stance on Afghanistan is carefully calculated to win votes. Remember, he and his colleagues once wrote an open letter to the USA apologizing for Canada's refusal to take part in the Iraq debacle. He is neither a pacifist nor a realist (nor an economist for that matter). He is an opportunist.

It is a UEFA category four stadium. The 90,000-capacity venue (105,000 combined seating and standing) is the second largest stadium in Europe, and serves as England's national stadium. It is the home venue of the England national football team, and hosts the latter stages of the top level domestic club cup competition, the FA Cup. It is owned by English football's governing body, The Football Association (The FA), through their subsidiary Wembley National Stadium Ltd (WNSL).
